Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was hailed as a prophet and censured for his outspoken social criticism. He experienced life in the world to its fullest before spending his last 27 years as a monk in the austere Trappist order. By the end of his life he had become one of the 20th century's best known and loved spiritual writers and mystics. His books include The Seven Story Mountain and Spiritual Direction and Meditation.
